Definition and Evolution

Web 2.0 is "the use of World Wide Web technology and web design that aim to enchance creativity, communications, secure information sharing, collaboration and functionality of the web", as cited from Wikipedia.

In short, Web 2.0 is the web you are accessing everyday. The difference between Web 2.0 and its ancestor is identified by Bart Decrem, ex-CEO of Flock, as "participatory Web" and "Web-as-information-source" respectively.

Throughout the years, the internet has evolved to let not only the webmaster to input or change the information of a web but the user as well, such as Wikipedia.

Other Web 2.0 sites are Flickr, which allows the uploading of photos and Youtube, which allows the sharing of videos. This function of storing and sharing multimedia can only be seen in Web 2.0.

There are arguments that the Web 2.0 is not a new version of Internet but rather, a continuation of using Web 1.0's technologies and concepts. Amazon.com was cited as an example. Since 1995, Amazon allows users to contribute reviews and guides. This function has been a factor of being a Web 2.0 website but Amazon has this function since the age of Web 1.0.

Tim Berners-Lee, a computer scientist that is credited for inventing the World Wide Web says that "if Web 2.0 for you is blogs and wikis, then that is people to people. But that was what the Web was supposed to be all along." "A piece of Jargon" is what he described the term "Web 2.0".

I feel that Web 2.0 is a new revolution of the internet. In Web 1.0, we could not upload and share pictures and videos. We ain't allowed to change the web contents at that time, except Amazon probably. When the uploading and sharing of multimedia is introduced, it changes the whole internet. The number behind the term "Web 2.0" means this is the second version. A version is created whenever changes or modifications are made.

What are your view of the net being called Web 2.0?

There has been anticipation of the coming of Web 3.0. Artificial Intelligence and advancement in computer graphics have been some factors to the evolving Web. Take a look at this website, http://www.a-i.com/. It has a messenger bot that can converse
with humans. In Web 2.0, we can see little or no use of AI. John Markoff of the New York Times call Web 3.0 as "The Intelligent Web".

If there will be Web 3.0, what new functions of the web would you like to see?

  1. I would like to see bots talking to us humans rather than searching the FAQs which only answers a limited number of questions for user, which i think is not enough. I would also like to see that Web 3.0 can take in more interactive features which could all people will find it easy to use and make internet a fun way to learn and be part of everyday life.

  2. When the day comes that Web 3.0 comes to fruition & people would be able to communicate with AI. It would be really interesting to see what kind of new services companies would be able to provide to the consumer. As it is in current games, like Command & Conquer 3, game programmers have already begun this human to AI interaction. The AI that you play against would adjust its tactics versus the human player to provide a more challenging experience. I look forward to Web 3.0

  4. Yes, it would be really interesting to see interactions between Humans and AI especially through the internet. I would also look forward to see how companies will make use of this technology to provide services for the consumer as well. AI interaction with people has been around for quite a while, as it is used in Games, whereby the AI adjusts its tactics to provide a more challenging experience to the player. I hope that when such interaction between AI & Humans over the internet does come to fruition, it would be in this lifetime.

  5. I agree, that it is interesting to see interactions between humans and the bots through the internet. It is a good thing to know that the technology had been improving real fast.

  6. Human+Bots?! As much as that's not even remotely insane, I am actually looking forward to such interactions! 2 completely different realms fused into one.
On the hindsight though, would that cause interactions between humans to be affected imminently? We all know by now that some of us may exude a different personality/perception face-to-face as compared to being 'anonymous' on the internet. That's one concern.

  7. I dont think Web 2.0 is really that bad.

As everyone knows, Technology is changing every now and then. It'll be really cool to know that the bots and humans could communicate in some way.

I will be looking forward to what web 3.0 has got in store for us.

We've all gotten use to web 2.0 and it has been easy for us to upload things for various reasons. As for the upcoming web 3.0 , I can't wait for it, but I think there are still some parts of web 2.0 which hasn't been discovered yet?. But I guess that's how fast technology is changing,so yea. =D

  10. Web 2.0 is a internet milestone because without it there wouldn't be the popular youtube, flickr and all the really useful existing sites today.

Web 3.0 would again change the internet for the better. But what will it be I would love to find out.

  11. well, 2.0 is already far from interesting. Its already a user friendly web. And if there is 3.0, i really looking forward to it. I do not know what to expect from 3.0. Let it be a surprise just like 2.0.

  12. Web 2.0 is already the best we could ever ask for, if there is a web 3.0, I would also hope there would be interaction between the user and the computer like other comments say.

  13. It does seem that Web 3.0 will bridge the gap between man and machine even more.

Coming back to Web 2.0, how has your own experience with it been? What other examples of Web 2.0 are there?

  14. Maybe with Web 3.0 users will be able to do something that is much more greater than the Web 2.0 like being able to much more faster and more applications will be implemented.

  15. Web 2.0 is very convenient and user-friendly, it brings the world closer. Convenient as we can watch any video anytime we want to and upload pictures to let friends and family see how we are doing overseas. User-friendly as we only need to click a few times and the internet will settle the other things for us.

Other Web 2.0 sites include Amazon and eBay.

  16. web 2.0 is already allow users to view upload pictures and videos which many teenagers are using very often. Woah, web 3.0 would definitely be something everyone would look forward for. Maybe web 3.0 will allow human to communicate with the computer and stuff.

  17. With A.I. being implement in the web system, i think that web 3.0 would be much more interesting to be using on.

  18. Web 3.0 definitely sound like a very good application for the future. Imagine able to tell a bot to search the information that you want through the vast amount of information found in the internet and informing you when the search is done.

And to make it better, the bot learns as it does this and get results that is what you wants. This certainly make it exciting and I just can't wait to see it be implemented.
